30 Quotes by Iyanla Vanzant

“Plan your hours to be productive…Plan your weeks to be educational…Plan your years to be purposeful. Plan your life to be an experience of growth. Plan to change. Plan to grow.”

“You know why the road curves as you’re driving along? It curves because if God showed us the distance from where we are to where we’re going, we’d think it was too far.”

“We are distracted from our greatness because are greatness is what scares us. Right where you are…God is.”

“Every day is your day if you claim it. If you wait for somebody else to make it for you, you’re going to be disappointed.”

“When you don’t show up as who you are, people fall in love with who you’re not. Then when they find out who you are, that’s when they leave.”

“Breathing deeply and releasing fear will help you get to where you want to be.”

“Everything that happens to you is a reflection of what you believe about yourself. We cannot outperform our level of self-esteem. We cannot draw to ourselves more than we think we are worth.”

“Loving yourself has nothing to do with being selfish, self-centered or self-engrossed. It means that you accept yourself for what you are. Loving yourself means that you accept responsibility for your own development, growth and happiness.”

“Everything is just as it needs to be. And if we would forgive, our minds and hearts would open and we could see another possibility.”

“When you stand and share your story in an empowering way, your story will heal you and your story will heal somebody else.”

“All things are lessons God would have you learn, and the best students get the hardest tests.”

“Your job, work, life assignment must be the spark that fuels your fire. It must be a passion that you pursue. You must want it enough to do it for free. You must be willing to stick with it, taking the ups and downs, giving it all that you are for as long as you can! You’ve got to taste it, smell it, know it whether you are awake or asleep. If you do not have a lustful passion for your work, you really need to find something else to do.”

“If you don’t enjoy your life, sorrow, sadness, suffering, fear, shame and guilt will.”

“You can accept or reject the way you are treated by other people, but until you heal the wounds of your past, you will continue to bleed. You can bandage the bleeding with food, with alcohol, with drugs, with work, with cigarettes, with sex, but eventually, it will all ooze through and stain your life. You must find the strength to open the wounds, stick your hands inside, pull out the core of the pain that is holding you in your past, the memories, and make peace with them.”

“Anger is a little thing. Hate is a little thing. Order is a little thing. Each of these little things has a major impact on the big picture. Right thinking, right action, and right response to the little things will help us conquer the big things, like injustice, inequality, poverty, and disorder. Until we are each able to conquer and master the little things in our lives, the big things will remain undone.”

“The road of life is strewn with the bodies of promising people. People who show promise, yet lack the confidence to act. People who make promises they are unable to keep. People who promise to do tomorrow what they could do today. Promising young stars, athletes, entrepreneurs who wait for promises to come true. Promise without a goal and a plan is like a barren cow. You know what she could do if she could do it, but she can’t. Turn your promise into a plan. Make no promise for tomorrow if you are able to keep it today. And if someone calls you promising, know that you are not doing enough today.”

“Today, I choose awareness. I choose to be aware of the beauty of life and living. I choose to be aware of the simple pleasures in life. I choose awareness of joy, awareness of peace, and awareness of love.”

“When you refuse to pay attention to what life is saying to you, life will make its point very clear. Life wants us to be aware of ourselves so we can make the necessary adjustments in order to live more harmoniously.”

“You will stumble at time, forget what you want, fall headfirst into your old habits and beliefs. Fear not! Always remember to be patient and loving with yourself and others because that is what God does all the time.”

“Your character – your nature, the distinctive qualities of your essence, what make you – is developed through experience. When life detects that there is an opportunity for you to advance the nature of your character, it will send the perfect situation and people your way. Your job is to respond in a manner that develops and strengthens your character.”

“Your greatest adversary is also your greatest teacher. Like it or not, it is the job of certain people to bring out the worst in you. What they trigger is already in you. They are here to reveal the sore, tender wounded places in your heart and mind, and they are providing you with a wonderful and divine opportunity for healing.”

“You cannot experience the fullness of your authentic self or life when you live to avoid hurt. You will never know the joy of love or the peaceful satisfaction of being loved if you hide from hurt.”

“Would you believe that there are many eager angels, guardians and guides just waiting to serve you? They have everything you need to satisfy your spirit. Take a moment to identify all the things that would fulfill your spirit, then ask the angels to serve it up.”

“Would you believe that there are many eager angels, guardians and guides just waiting to serve you? They have everything you need to satisfy your spirit. Take a moment to identify all the things that would fulfill your spirit, then ask the angels to serve it up.”

“Have the courage to be exactly who you are without apology. Admit your mistakes without beating yourself up. Release all shame! Release all guilt! You cannot live if you are hiding behind what was. Focus on what is, right now, and that is you!”

“Each of us was born to fulfill a divine purpose. As we open our hearts and minds to a new way of being, the purpose of our lives unfolds organically.”

“You do not have to love what is going on in your life, but you must accept that it, whatever it is, is going on. As long as you do not accept reality, you are powerless to define the role you will play.”

My favorite Iyanla quote of all time: (with one palm sideways across the forehead and the other palm going the opposite way holding across the back of the head) “SAVE YOURSELF!”
I love Iyanla Vanzant. Ever since the first time I saw her on Oprah years ago, I think it was ’96 or ’97. She was profound even then. Iyanla is such a genius. She is so amazing because she will never let you hide from yourself. She is tough, but we all need tough love to grow and evolve and facilitate positive change. She is fulfilling her life’s purpose & her courage in life encourages others to do the same.
